Saar 2012

In 1990, when the Expedition started work at Saar, the archaeological remains were in danger of being bulldozed: concrete blocks demarcating new housing units covered the area. In 2002, after a decade of research and excavation, the Bahrain Government submitted Saar for inclusion on the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage status, and in 2007 famous Japanese architect Tadeo Ando was commissioned to produce preliminary sketches for a museum at the site. Today a new generation of Bahraini heritage professionals is working hard to preserve Saar and other important monuments in the face of ever-increasing pressure on land and natural resources.
